The Tragic Story of Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc is considered a heroine of France. What’s her story? What was her role in the Hundred Years’ War?

Last week I talked about May Day. This week I propose to talk about Joan of Arc.

Joan of Arc is considered a heroine of France.

She was born during a long war between France and England, called “the Hundred Years’ War”. At age 17, she claimed to have received from God the mission to deliver France from English domination.

She managed to meet the claimant to the throne of France in 1429 and announced his upcoming coronation and his future victories. He launched an investigation on her, and also had the young girl examined to confirm she was a virgin. He then allowed her to join the army to liberate the city of Orléans from the English siege. Dressed as a man, wearing short hair, Joan of Arc was able to force the English to lift the siege. There she earned her nickname: “the Maid of Orléans”.

Joan of Arc then accompanied the dauphin (heir to the throne) to the French city of Reims, where the French kings were traditionally crowned. They crossed enemy territory and reached the city, where King Charles VII was then crowned.

Joan of Arc then attempted to liberate Paris from the hands of the English and their French allies, the Burgundians, but failed. The following year, in 1430, she was captured by the Burgundians while attempting to free the city of Compiegne. They sold her to the English.

Joan of Arc was imprisoned by the English and placed on trial for heresy. Her judges accused her of behaving like a man, of having imagined the voice she said she had heard from God and of not acknowledging the church’s authority. They declared her guilty. They offered her to stay in a Church prison if she confessed, and she did, but when she realized that they had lied to her, she recanted her previous abjuration and was then sentenced to death. The Maid of Orléans was burned to the stake on May 30, 1431.

The Hundred Years’ War ended in 1453 with the French victory, whereas before the appearance of Joan of Arc, everyone thought that the English were going to win. A few years later, Joan of Arc was rehabilitated thanks to the intervention of King Charles VII and her family. The Catholic Church made her a Saint in 1920.

The story of Joan of Arc has inspired numerous books and films. The list of the latest movies on her life include: The Messenger, directed by Luc Besson and starring Mila Jovovitch, and the French film “Jeanne Captive” with Clémence Poesy.

La semaine dernière, je vous ai parlé du premier mai. Cette semaine, je vous propose de vous parler de Jeanne D’Arc.

Jeanne D’Arc est une héroïne de l’Histoire française.

Elle est née pendant une longue guerre entre la France et l’Angleterre, que l’on appelle la guerre de Cent Ans. A L’âge de 17 ans, elle déclara avoir reçu mission de Dieu de délivrer la France de l’occupation anglaise.

Elle parvint à rencontrer le prétendant au trône de France en 1429 et elle lui annonça son sacre prochain ainsi que ses prochaines victoires. Celui-ci fit mener une enquête et fit également examiner la jeune fille pour confirmer qu’elle était vierge. Il la laissa ensuite rejoindre l’armée pour libérer la ville d’Orléans des anglais. Habillée comme un homme, les cheveux courts, Jeanne d’Arc parvint à contraindre les Anglais à lever le siège de la ville. C’est là qu’elle gagna le surnom de pucelle d’Orléans.

Jeanne d’Arc accompagna ensuite le dauphin jusqu’à la ville française de Reims, où étaient traditionnellement couronnés les rois de France. Ils traversèrent les territoires ennemis et parvinrent jusqu’à la ville, où le roi Charles VII fut couronné.

Jeanne d’Arc tenta ensuite de libérer Paris des mains des anglais et de leurs alliés français, les bourguignons, mais elle échoua. L’année suivante, en 1430, elle fut capturée par les bourguignons alors qu’elle essayait de libérer la ville de Compiègne. Ceux-ci la vendirent aux anglais.

Jeanne d’Arc fut emprisonnée par les anglais et jugée pour hérésie. Ses juges l’accusèrent de se comporter comme un homme, d’avoir imaginé les voix qu’elle disait avoir entendu de Dieu et de ne pas respecter l’autorité de l’église. Ils la déclarèrent coupable. Ils lui offrirent de la mener dans une prison de l’Église si elle avouait, ce qu’elle fit mais, comprenant qu’on lui avait menti, elle se rétracta et elle fut alors condamnée à mort. La Pucelle D’Orléans fut brulée vive le 30 Mai 1431.

La guerre de cent ans s’acheva en 1453 par la victoire française, alors qu’avant l’apparition de Jeanne D’Arc, tout le monde pensait que les anglais allaient gagner. Quelques années plus tard, Jeanne d’Arc fut réhabilitée grâce à l’intervention du roi Charles VII et de sa famille. Elle est considérée comme sainte par l’Église catholique depuis 1920.

L’histoire de Jeanne d’Arc a inspiré de nombreux livres et films. Parmi les derniers films sur sa vie, on peut citer : Jeanne D’Arc, réalisé par Luc Besson et avec Mila Jovovitch, et le film français Jeanne Captive avec Clémence Poesy.
