The Beast of Gévaudan is an animal that attacked and killed many inhabitants of a region that was called the “Gévaudan”. What is the full story and why were people so scared of the beast? Where did it come from? And was it actually a beast… or something else?

The Beast of Gévaudan’s story

The Beast of Gévaudan is an animal that attacked and killed many inhabitants of a region that was called the “Gévaudan” (current department of “Lozère”). The attacks took place over three years from 1764, during the reign of King Louis XV. These attacks were heavily covered by the press of the kingdom of France, something that contributed to surround the animal with an aura of legend.

In 1765, a first wolf was killed and stuffed by order of the king, who said it was the beast. But the attacks continued the following two years. In 1767, a second animal was killed by a peasant. As the attacks ceased after this death, many people believe that this animal was the Beast of Gévaudan.

Man or Beast?

Even today, we are not sure of the appearance of the animal. Descriptions from the time of the attacks are very contradictory. The beast is described as a large animal, very agile and aggressive, that was not afraid to attack in daylight and even resisted to bullets. It looked more like a large dog than a wolf, and it might have been a hybrid of the two races. The animal slaughtered by the farmer was of unusual dimensions and weighed more than 50 kilos.

Other historians believe that the Beast of Gévaudan was an African animal like a lion or a hyena, which had been brought from Africa or had escaped from a zoo.

What is also discussed is the possibility that the beast had been trained to kill and was accompanied by a man while hunting. Many victims have indeed been beheaded, but the decapitation is not an animal behavior. In addition, some bodies were found stripped naked, which is also very strange.

Based on previous cases of cannibal men who dressed like animals, some historians think that the beast was actually a cannibal.

Finally, some people think that the beast was actually a paranormal event or even a werewolf. The bishops of the time also claimed that the beast had been sent by God to punish men for their sins.

After the Beast …

In total, the beast has made more than 150 casualties, including 80 deaths. Most were children or teenagers who were guarding sheep.

A very good French movie to see on the story of the Beast of Gévaudan is “The Brotherhood of the Wolves.” Even if it does not fully respect the story of the beast, actors and staging are very good, so I highly recommend it.
